What is the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act?

The "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion" is a current bill in Congress that would keep federal funds from paying for abortions. It would codify the Hyde Amendment. The Hyde Amendment prevents federal taxpayer funds from funding abortions. The Hyde amendment is not permanent law, but rather, Congress has passed it every year since its introduction in 1976. Since 1976, however, different Congresses have changed the Hyde amendment to suit their own political ends.

The current bill would make the Hyde amendment permanent law.

What about non-federal funds?

The  proposed bill would not apply to any "individual, entity or State or locality." It would apply to the District of Columbia. 

 

What about rape, incest, and the life of the mother?

The bill provides exceptions if the pregnancy is, "the result of an act of rape or incest; or in the case where a woman suffers from a physical disorder, physical injurty, or physical illness that would, as certified by a physician, place the woman in danger of death unless an abortion is performed."
