PRI, armed with proof that the UNFPA is complicit with forced abortions and sterilizations around the world, is fighting the movement to give them our tax dollars.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) claims to work "to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect."
However, PRI's repeated investigations in countries like China and Peru have proven that this is a lie. Our investigations found that UNFPA officials work hand-in-glove with the very family planning officials who carry out forced abortions and forced sterilizations. According to the Kemp-Kasten amendment, it is illegal for United States tax dollars to fund organizations who are connected with coercive abortion or sterilization practices.
Even Colin Powell, who generally supports family planning, has urged that the U.S. government stop funding the UNFPA. Said Powell in a 2002 letter to Congress. "UNFPA's support of, and involvement in, China's population-planning activities allows the Chinese government to implement more effectively its program of coercive abortion."
In spite of all this, president Obama has promised to re-fund the UNFPA, spending more American tax dollars to fund forced abortions abroad. We believe that this action would constitute a violation of U.S. law and a breaking of faith with the American people.
