Let's Stop Wasting Aid Money
Every year, the United States government sets aside billions of dollars for projects in the developing world. Many of these projects are good: money for malaria prevention, child survival, clean water, and HIV/AIDS research.
The developing world is crying out for aid, and oftentimes we simply don't listen. Instead, we waste money sending them things that they don't need, don't want, and will never use. Things like boatloads of condoms, sent to people in Africa who will be dead of malaria before they could ever use them. Things like experimental "birth control" devices that get tested on South American women, causing infections, sterility, and even death.
And sometimes, tragically, our tax dollars end up paying for forced abortions and forced sterilizations abroad. Don't believe us? Read about it here, and here.
People in developing nations are asking for our help. The trouble is, we keep sending them the things we think they need, not the things they tell us they need.
At PRI, we're committed to cutting funding to harmful programs and redirecting that money to uncontroversial ones, like malaria relief, clean water, and child survival. We actually travel to these countries ourselves, collecting first-hand evidence of aid groups
that abuse government funds. Then we bring this information to Washington DC and work to get these groups de-funded.
And it works, too. So far, we've managed to get over $790 million cut from the budgets of groups who were using tax dollars for forced abortion and forced sterilization. Once cut, that money was freed up to go to programs that really needed it.
